EARLY GOAL GIVES WOMEN'S SOCCER 1-0 VICTORY OVER UC RIVERSIDE
9/6/2008
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior Ashley Forbes scored in the eighth minute to give the Sacramento State women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UC Riverside on Friday, Sept. 5 at UCR Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-1-1 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 3-2-0.
Sacramento State wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as 7:53 into the game Forbes notched her first career goal on a feed from sophomore Leah Larot, giving Sacramento State an early 1-0 lead. The Hornets controlled the remainder of the half, outshooting the Highlanders by an 8-5 margin, to take the one goal advantage into the locker room.
After intermission, UC Riverside picked up the offensive pace, but were stimied by the Hornets defensive backfield and senior goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence. The Hornets faced 15 shots and eight corner kicks in the second half, and only allowed three shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Lawrence, who recorded her eighth career clean sheet.
The Hornets were led offensively by junior Kim Kemper, who posted three shots including two on goal, while four other Hornets posted two shots apiece. The matchup between the two clubs was the first ever night game played at UCR Soccer Stadium.
Sacramento State will next take to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. as they take on UC Santa Barbara. Between contests the Hornets will spend Saturday attending the L.A. Galaxys’ matchup with Real Salt Lake, where they will be honored for their 2007 Big Sky Conference Championship.
