WOMEN'S SOCCER HEADED TO NCAA TOURNAMENT AFTER 3-0 WIN OVER NORTHERN COLORADO

11/11/2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Led by two goals from senior Katie McCoy, Sacramento State defeated Northern Colorado 3-0 on Sunday, Nov. 11, winning the 2007 Big Sky Conference Championship and earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Hornets improve their record on the season to 12-3-5, while earning the school’s first ever NCAA Tournament berth in women’s soccer. With the loss, the Bears end their season with a record of 8-9-3, making the conference tournament finals in just their second year of conference competition.

Sacramento State wasted little time getting into the scoring column, as in the 8th minute, senior Amanda Gray sent a cross into the box that was heel trapped by sophomore Danielle Holloway onto the awaiting foot of sophomore Kim Kemper. Kemper, a first team all-Big Sky selection, jammed it into the back of the net to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead.

Insurance would come in the 40th minute, as Gray sent a cross into the box that was trapped into the back of the net by McCoy to give the Hornets a two goal lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw McCoy light up the scoreboard for a second time, scoring off of a corner from Gray to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead in the 76th minute. The goal gave her 14 on the season, a new Hornet school record for single-scoring goal scoring.

For the match, Sacramento State outshot the Bears 19-7, including a 7-5 lead in shots on goal. McCoy posted eight shots to lead all attackers, while seven Bears each took a lone shot apiece.

Hornet sophomore ‘keeper Mandy Trojan completed her ninth clean sheet of the season, securing four saves, while her counterpart Heidi Owen stopped four shots for the Bears.

After the match, the all-Tournament team was announced. McCoy was named Tournament MVP, while Gray, Kemper, Trojan, senior Katie Burton and junior Missy Matzen earned all-Tournament honors. A complete list of all-Tournament honorees is listed at the bottom of the page.

Sacramento State will learn their NCAA Tournament fate during the NCAA Selection Show, which will air on Monday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. Pacific time on ESPNews.
