SACRAMENTO STATE DOWNS CHICO STATE 4-2 IN EXHIBITION TILT
8/19/2007
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women's soccer team took the pitch for the first time in the 2007 season, dispatching of a tough Chico State team at Hornet Field in exhibition action by the score of 4-2.
The Hornets struck first midway through the first half as senior Amanda Gray ball off of a cross from sophomore Danielle Holloway that was redirected by junior Tiffany Fraser, to take a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime.
Chico State, a team that defeated Nevada in an exhibition match up earlier this week, came fighting hard out of the gates in the second half, scoring two goals in a span of a minute and 20 seconds as Emese Grek and Whitney MacDonald notched two unassisted goals to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead with 30:42 to go.
Sacramento State would fight back less than five minutes later as Gray took a beautiful lead pass from junior Sarah Howard and found the back of the net for the second time in the game to tie the count at 2-2. Less than 10 minutes later, the Hornets would connect on the game winning goal as sophomore Katelin Hopping's header found the back of the net, connecting on a perfect right-footed cross off of a free kick from senior Katie McCoy, to turn the score in the home team's favor at 3-2.
Freshman Leah Larot added a goal with less than a minute remaining on an excellent dribbling display from near midfield all the way down into the right-hand side of the box. Her cross pitch shot found bounded over Wildcat keeper Kari Gonzales and into the left-hand side of the net to cement the victory in favor of Sacramento State.
The Hornets continue exhibition action next Sunday, Aug. 26, as they travel to San Francisco to take on the Dons. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
