SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State’s Kayelyn Satkowski scored her eighth goal of the season in the 85th minute, but the Hornets could not tally the game winner during overtime, playing Montana to a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
The Hornets are now 7-6-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Big Sky Conference, while the Grizzlies hold a similar 1-1-1 league record and are now 7-6-1 on the year.
Sacramento State produced the better scoring chances during the match, especially in overtime, outshooting Montana 8-1 in the final 20 minutes. Freshman forward Kim Kemper created a dangerous opportunity in the 94th minute, heading a five-yard shot toward the Montana net that Grizzly goalkeeper Grace Harris saved with a one-handed punch over the crossbar.
Things got even more complicated in the 109th minute when Harris was red carded for playing the ball with her hands outside the box. Sara Campbell took over in the net and denied Sacramento State the rest of the way, making one stop on Beverly Goebel in the final minute.
It was Sacramento State’s fifth overtime match in its last six games, posting a 2-2-2 record during that span.
Montana’s Lindsay Winans gave the Grizzlies an edge in the 69th minute, finding a loose ball in front of Sacramento State’s goal after a corner.
The Hornets pushed for the equalizer, outshooting Montana 10-5 in the second half, and finally found the back of the net in the 85th minute. Satkowski’s 15-yard shot took a deflection off a Montana defender and beat Harris to the left corner.
It was the 2004 Casa Roble High School graduate’s team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Harris made a match-high nine saves, while Sacramento State goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence tallied six.
Sacramento State continues Big Sky play on Sunday, hosting Eastern Washington at 2:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the men’s team, who will kick off at 12 p.m. against Denver. It will also be PEPSI Kids’ Day with children ages 17 and under admitted for free and PEPSI-sponsored prizes and halftime festivities.
