9/15/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State took an early lead and never looked back in a 3-2 victory over Menlo College on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets improve to 5-2 on the year and are off to their best start in program history. It was the first loss of the season for the Oaks, who fall to 4-1 on the year.

Sacramento State junior forward Katie McCoy scored in the 10th minute with a 10-yard shot to the near post. It was senior Maggie Murphy and junior Kayelyn Satkowski setting up the play and finding McCoy open just 10 yards wide of goal.

For McCoy, it was her third goal of the season and the La Mesa, Calif., native now has 12 career goals, ranking fifth all-time.

Menlo answered in the 26th minute, tying the match after a Hornet turnover in the defensive third. Menlo’s Rachel Anden quickly capitalized, gaining possession and sending a low shot to the far corner.

Sacramento State sophomore Missy Matzen the put the Hornets ahead for good in the 39th minute. The 2005 Rio Americano High School graduate one-timed her shot to the far post after receiving a cross over the top of the defense from senior Natalia Romo.

Katie Burton’s first goal of the season came just three minutes into the second half and gave the Hornets a needed two-goal lead. In the 48th minute, the Las Vegas native connected with McCoy along the right side and buried her shot past Menlo goalkeeper Heather Klassen.

The Oaks added their second goal in the 74th minute. Ryanne Bergstorm lifted a 30-yard shot over the top of Sacramento State’s defense, taking a sharp bounce in front of Hornet goalkeeper Mandy Trojan and falling just under her grasp.

Satkowski continues to lead the team in scoring with four goals and three assists and the Hornets are now 5-0 when the 2004 Casa Roble graduate scores or registers an assist.

Sacramento will play its third match in five days at 25th-ranked Fresno State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
