SATKOWSKI’S GOLDEN GOAL LEADS WOMEN’S SOCCER TO 1-0 SHUTOUT OF SAINT MARY’S

8/29/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior forward Kayelyn Satkowski scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute to lead Sacramento State to a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary’s at Hornet Soccer Field on Tuesday afternoon.

A local product out of Casa Roble High School, Satkowski broke past the Gaels’ back line after receiving a diagonal pass from junior Katie McCoy. Satkowski buried her third career goal to the far post, beating Saint Mary’s goalkeeper Noelle Brown. McCoy now has nine career assists, ranking fifth in program history.

The Hornets picked up their first victory of the season and are now 1-1-0 on the year. For the Gaels, it was the team’s first loss, falling to 1-1-0.

For the second straight match, Sacramento State attacked aggressively, outshooting Saint Mary’s 22-8.

Satkowski had a match-high six shots, while Hornet freshman forward Kim Kemper had an additional five shots – four on goal – creating the more dangerous scoring opportunities in the match.

With less than three minutes left in regulation, Kemper, a 2006 Bella Vista High School graduate, came within inches of putting the match away. Dribbling through the box, Kemper lifted a shot over Brown and appeared to have the game winner, but the ball died on the goal line and was cleared by Saint Mary’s defense.

The Hornets also had a dangerous opportunity in the 80th minute when junior defender Tiffany Fraser had a shot deflect off the crossbar.

In her first start of the season, Sacramento State freshman goalkeeper Mandy Trojan kept a clean sheet with four saves. The Los Alamitos, Calif., native kept the match even in the 77th minute when Saint Mary’s produced its best opportunity of the game. Stefani Rocco placed one of her two shots to the far post, but Trojan reached the curling shot, punching it over the crossbar and securing the shutout.

In the first half, Kemper had another shot saved off the goal line by a diving Brown in the 18th minute.

For head coach Katie Poynter, this was her first win over Saint Mary’s in two previous tries. It is also the first time the program has beaten the Gaels in six tries, dating back to 1999.

Sacramento State will end its three-match homestand with another regional rival at 12 p.m. on Sunday, hosting UC Davis.
