WOMEN’S SOCCER CLINCHES BIG SKY TOURNAMENT BERTH WITH 2-0 SHUTOUT AT IDAHO STATE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State’s 2-0 shutout at Idaho State on Thursday afternoon clinched the Hornets their first Big Sky postseason tournament berth since 2001. The victory also keeps Sacramento State undefeated in conference with a 4-0-1 record.The Hornets’ final regular season match against Weber State (4-1-0) on Saturday will determine the regular season champion and host of the Big Sky postseason tournament. With a win or tie against the Wildcats, Sacramento State would earn its first ever Big Sky regular season championship. A loss would give Weber State its second consecutive championship.
Against the Bengals (4-11-1, 1-3-1), sophomore Tiffany Fraser picked an opportune time to score her first career goal in the sixth minute to give the Hornets an early lead. Her well-driven shot from the right side beat Idaho State goalkeeper Esther Toronto.
Ahead 1-0 at the half, Sacramento State’s leading goal scorer, sophomore forward Katie McCoy scored her seventh goal of the season in the 64th minute with the assist coming from sophomore Kayelyn Satkowski. McCoy has now scored a goal or registered an assist in the Hornets’ last five games for a team-leading 19 points.
Her scoring spree coincides with Sacramento State’s five-match wining streak, tying the program’s record set in 1994, the Hornets’ inaugural season. Sacramento State is also 8-6-3 in 2005, the program’s best win total since 2000.
Freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence recorded her fifth career shutout with a match-high three saves. The Belmont, Calif., native’s total ties her for second in single season program history and places her fourth in all-time program history.
