WOMEN’S SOCCER MAINTAINS UNDEFEATED RECORD IN BIG SKY WITH 2-1 WIN AT PORTLAND STATE
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State held on to to its first place standing in the Big Sky Conference with a 2-1 victory at Portland State on Sunday afternoon.Sophomore Katie McCoy’s two first half goals helped the Hornets improve their Big Sky record to a conference-leading 3-0-1. Sacramento State also improves to 7-6-3 on the season, as the team continues its four-match winning streak and five-game undefeated streak. The seven wins is the program’s best mark since 2000 and the four-match winning streak is its longest since 1999.
McCoy, who leads the team with six goals, tallied her first of the match in the 13th minute. Her shot from 12-yards out was assisted by junior Kelly Novak.
McCoy, a La Mesa, Calif., native, later scored in the 24th minute when the Hornets were awarded a penalty kick, giving Sacramento State a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
It was Portland State’s Juli Edwards who brought the Vikings within a goal in the 46th minute, recording her fourth of the year.
The Hornets were outshot 13-7 during the match, but Hornet freshman goalkeeper recorded a match-high five saves to maintain the team’s lead, assisted by defenders Mandi Siller, Marissa Condren and Kara Taylor.
Sacramento State has two matches remaining on the schedule as the team travels to Idaho State on Thursday and Weber State on Saturday. The regular season Big Sky Conference champion hosts the postseason tournament, with the top four finishers advancing. The Hornets, who finished last in the Big Sky just a year ago, have not advanced to the tournament since 2001.
The victory was the Hornets’ second on the road this year, dating back to the team’s season-opening 1-0 victory at UC Davis on Aug. 26. It was also the team’s first victory over the Vikings since 2001 and first win in Portland since 1997.
