WOMEN’S SOCCER SCORES FIRST BUT CAN’T HOLD OFF CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE IN LOSS

9/25/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Kristy Krohn scored twice as Cal State Northridge put away four unanswered goals in a 4-1 win over Sacramento State on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Katie McCoy’s shot from 18-yards out bended into the near post past Matador goalkeeper April Cline. It was McCoy’s first goal of the season as the Hornets maintained much of the possession in the first 20 minutes of the match, tallying two shots on goal and two corner kicks early on.

But it was a one-minute let down with 10 minutes left in the first half that put Cal State Northridge up for good. The Matadors, now 7-1-0 on the season, first scored when Kristal Phillips took the ball along the right side and found Brianna Monka open in the penalty box. Monka flicked a pass to an on running Mary Ortega, who was open on the left side. In alone on Hornet goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence, Ortega finished her shot to the far post, tying the game at 1-1 in th 35th minute.

Less than a minute later Sara Davis hit a free kick from 20-yards out that sailed in under the crossbar for the score that proved to be the game-winner.

Krohn added two unassisted insurance goals in the second half when she first volleyed in Monka’s deflected shot. Monka had split two Hornet defenders and was in alone on goal when Lawrence came up with one of her three saves on the afternoon, but Krohn was left open in the box and found her way to the rebound.

In the 76th minute, Krohn scored the Matadors’ fourth goal with a shot to the upper corner of the net.

Sacramento State had a late opportunity in the 85th minute to score a second goal when senior defender Mandi Siller was fouled in the penalty box. Siller’s penalty attempt was stopped by Matador goalkeeper Karen Comstock, who came into the game in the 79th minute, but it was ruled Comstock came off her line too early and the Hornets were awarded another chance.

Junior Kelly Novak took the second attempt and Comstock came up with a foot save that deflected to senior Amber Dragomir, who’s rebound shot was also stopped by Comstock.

Sacramento State was outshot 21-15, but put eight shots on frame, forcing Cline to make a match-high five saves before she came out of the match late in the second half. The Matadors took seven shots on goal, as Lawrence made three saves. Freshman Sarah Howard and Novak led the Hornets with two shots on goal apiece.

Sacramento State returns to Hornet Field on Sunday to play San Jose State at noon. The Spartans come into the game after a 2-0 loss to San Francisco and with a 0-8-1 record.
