WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYS TO SCORELESS TIE WITH MISSISSIPPI STATE

For the second consecutive match, Sacramento State played its opponent to overtime, with Sunday afternoon’s game against Mississippi State ending in a 0-0 scoreless tie after 110 minutes of soccer.

It was the Hornets’ final game at the Sun City Invitational, hosted by UTEP, with Sacramento State finishing 0-1-1 at the tournament and with its overall record now 2-3-1 on the season.

The Hornets had the most of the offensive opportunities during the match, outshooting Mississippi State 18-9, including 10-3 in the second half and 3-1 in overtime.

Senior defender Amber Dragomir led the Hornets with three shots on goal, as Sacramento State forced Bulldog goalkeeper Emily Meyers to make a match-high six saves. Junior Maggie Murphy and freshman Sarah Howard tagged on two shots on goal apiece.

The Hornet defense, led by freshman Kara Taylor, sophomore Tiffany Fraser and seniors Mandi Siller and Marissa Condren limited Mississippi State to three shots on goal as freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence made three saves for the clean sheet. The Belmont, Calif., native has now recorded three shutouts in her first six matches.

Despite 11 opportunities, Sacramento State couldn’t convert on corner kicks during the match, while holding the Bulldogs (0-2-3) to just one corner during the entire 110 minutes.

The Hornets now have a 12-day layoff before their next match against Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 at Hornet Field.
