Sacramento State played evenly with undefeated UTEP for 90 minutes, but couldn’t hold off the Miners as Angie Kleinfelder scored the golden goal in UTEP’s 1-0 overtime win at the Sun City Invitational on Friday afternoon.UTEP improves to 6-0-0 on the season, while the Hornets drop to 2-3-0.
Kleinfelder notched her second goal of the season in the 93rd minute with a shot to the left corner.
The Hornets and Miners were even for much of the match with each team taking 12 shots. Hornet goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence made four saves as UTEP’s Kia Sams led her team with two shots on frame.
Miner goalkeeper Brittany Popoff helped UTEP secure the shutout with four saves as seniors Linda Sanchez and Courtney Gorham, junior Maggie Murphy and sophomore Rebeccah Phillips all registered shots on goal for the Hornets.
Sacramento State will continue its play at the Sun City Invitational on Sunday with a 10 a.m. (PST) match against Mississippi State.
