SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior Linda Sanchez scored her first goal of the season and sixth of her career in a 1-0 shutout of Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.Senior Amber Dragomir started the play in the 19th minute with a cross into the Bulldogs’ penalty box. The pass was brought down by sophomore Rebeccah Phillips, who found Sanchez making a diagonal run into the area. Sanchez placed her shot near post and in the corner past diving Fresno State goalkeeper Angie Larsen.
The Hornets are now 2-2 on the season, their best start since 2000. The team and freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence, have also recorded two shutouts in their first four matches. Lawrence, who was named Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29, is averaging 7.0 saves per game including posting six against the Bulldogs.
Sanchez, the Hornets’ leading goal scorer last season, now has a goal and an assist already in 2005. For Phillips, it was her first career assist and Dragomir’s first as well.
Fresno State (1-3-0) outshot Sacramento State 14-5, but only six of the Bulldogs opportunities fell on goal. Courtney Sobrero had a match-high three shots on frame for Fresno State, while junior Maggie Murphy, freshman Missy Matzen and Dragomir also recorded shots for the Hornets.
Sacramento State will play its next two matches at the UTEP Tournament, against UTEP on Friday and Mississippi State on Sunday. The Hornets return home for a 3 p.m. match against Cal State Northridge on Friday, Sept. 23 at Hornet Field.
