SILLER’S GOAL SPURS WOMEN’S SOCCER TO 1-0 SHUTOUT OF UC DAVIS

8/26/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior defender Mandi Siller knocked in the game-winner in Sacramento State’s 1-0 victory over causeway-rival UC Davis in both teams'' season openers, on Friday afternoon at Aggie Field.

Sophomore Katie McCoy swung a corner kick in the penalty area during the 35th minute and after a scramble in front of the goal, the ball fell to senior midfielder Linda Sanchez, who was open at the top of the box. Her volley sailed over UC Davis goalkeeper Krystyn Lizak and careened off the crossbar, leaving Siller with the ball and an open net in front of her for the tap-in.

For Siller, a Rio Americano HS graduate, the goal was the fifth of her career and less than a minute later, she was back to her defensive duties on the other end of the field clearing out a dangerous ball in front of the Hornets’ goal.

With the victory, the Hornets are 1-0 going into their home opener against UC Riverside at noon on Sunday at Hornet Field. The Aggies open their season 0-1. Sacramento State also takes the first five points in the Causeway Cup. A championship that awards each school points upon victories in head-to-head matchups. The victory now gives Sacramento State a 5-0 lead over UC Davis.

Freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Lawrence was pelted with shots from UC Davis, but recorded the clean sheet with 11 saves in her first collegiate match. The Belmont, Calif., native recorded the first shutout for the Hornets ,since a 1-0 victory over Utah on Oct. 5, 2003.

UC Davis took 20 shots in the game compared to the Hornets’ three, but all three of Sacramento State’s opportunities fell on frame with 11 of UC Davis’ opportunities coming on goal. McCoy and sophomore forward Amanda Gray were the other two Hornets with shots on frame, while the Aggies had their best chance to even the score in the 39th minute when Christen Rauschnot’s shot hit the post.

The Hornet defense, which limited the quality of the Aggies’ opportunities, was led by freshman Kara Taylor, sophomore Tiffany Fraser and seniors Amber Dragomir and Marissa Condren along with Siller.

Junior Kaycee Fontes had an opportunity to score in the 87th minute in a one v. one opportunity with Lizak, but the Aggie goalkeeper made the save.
