WOMEN’S SOCCER DROPS BIG SKY OPENER TO PORTLAND STATE 1-0

10/8/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State lost its Big Sky opener to Portland State, 1-0, at Hornet Soccer Field Friday afternoon.

The Vikings (4-5-2, 1-0) scored in the 37th minute, when a loose ball in the penalty box was pushed out by Portland State’s Karly Larsen to her oncoming teammate, Juile Edwards. Edwards’ blast from 25-yards out was out of the reach of Hornet freshman goalkeeper Brittany Auernig. For Auernig, it was her second match of the season where she played the full 90 minutes in between the posts.

Sacramento State’s best opportunity to tie the score came at in the 61st minute, when freshman Tiffany Fraser made a pass into open space for freshman Amanda Gray. Gray past the Viking defenders in the race to the ball and her shot was on goal, but deflected over the crossbar by Portland State goalkeeper Niki Brooks.

Brooks had two saves in the match and Auernig had a match-high 10 saves, including three saves where she came off her line to stop Viking forwards that had gotten past the Hornet backline.

Auernig has now played 410 minutes in the net and has a team-high 37 saves.

The Hornets (2-9-1) were outshot 18-4, but the Sacramento State defense limited the quality of chances Portland State had on goal. Defenders Amber Dragomir, Natalia Romo, Sela Suarez, Mandi Siller and Sarah Moses limited the Vikings to 11 shots on goal.

Gray and freshman Katie McCoy each had one shot on goal, while Sophia Mundy led Portland State with four shots on frame.

Sacramento State will next play a non-conference match at noon on Monday, Oct. 11 at Hornet Soccer Field against Colorado College. The Hornets will resume Big Sky play at Northern Arizona on Friday at Oct. 15.
