SAN JOSE STATE SCORES THREE UNANSWERED GOALS AGAINST WOMEN'S SOCCER

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State went scoreless and was outshot 22-10 in a 3-0 loss to San Jose State, Friday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

Hornet midfielder and freshman Rebeccah Phillips had a match-high four shots on goal, but was stopped by Spartan goalkeeper Adrienne Herbet, who had a match-high six saves.

Sacramento State (2-7) held the Spartans scoreless until the 43rd minute, when Kirstin Tanaka took a shot from 20-yards out and beat Hornet goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman. It was Balzouman’s eighth start of the season and she had five saves during the match.

Despite Phillips four-shot effort, along with Hornets Katie McCoyNatalia Romo and Courtney Gorham, who also registered shot on goal, Sacramento State failed to reach the back of the net.

The Spartans (2-6) added two goals in the second half, when Christina Morrison scored her second goal of the season in the 78th minute, beating freshman goalkeeper Brittany Auernig, who replaced Balzouman at halftime.

In the 84th minute, San Jose State made the score 3-0 with a header from Jackie Zabek. Zabek led the Spartans with three shots on goal.

The Hornets will return to action at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Soccer Field against Saint Mary’s (7-3). The Gaels are coming off a 2-1 loss to USC and are led by Genevieve Hollis, who has six goals on the season.
