SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshmen Katie McCoy and Alecia Homer each scored their first goals of the season, respectively, in Sacramento State’s 2-1 overtime win over Nevada, Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.In the 100th minute of overtime, McCoy broke free of the Wolfpack defense deep in the offensive third of the field. From the right side, she sailed in a curling shot that dropped in the net over the head of Nevada goalkeeper Megan Tarpenning.
McCoy’s golden goal was her first collegiate goal, and of her three shots on the day, the only one that fell on goal. It was Sacramento State’s second-straight win on the season and second-straight game with multiple goal scorers.
Both teams missed opportunities throughout the game, Nevada (0-6) finished with a game-high 22 shots, 13 of which fell on goal, but the Hornets (2-3) were first to find the back of the net in the 84th minute.
Sophomore forward Kelly Novak was pulled down from behind on a breakaway by Nevada defender Amy Jackson, who was then given a red card. The Wolfpack then had to finish the game with only ten players.
Junior Linda Sanchez then took the direct kick for the Hornets, which deflected out for a corner kick. Sanchez took the corner and swung the ball into the box. Tarpenning deflected the ball and it fell in front Homer, who scored her first-ever collegiate goal, giving Sacramento State the 1-0 lead.
Just six minutes later the Wolfpack responded when Lauren Kinneman’s cross found Jessica Wilcox open at the back post. Wilcox’s header beat freshman goalkeeper Brittany Auernig, to tie the game at 1-1 and send it in to overtime.
Senior Michelle Balzouman was between the posts for the Hornets in the first half, tallying six saves and coming off her line on numerous occasions to keep the ball from the back of the net. Auernig came on in the second half and finished the game with five saves, also making diving saves in front of her net. Tarpenning had a game-high nine saves.
Sacramento State finished 20 shots, 11 of which were on goal, led by junior Amber Gwinn, Homer, Novak and Sanchez, who each had two shots on goal.
Wilcox had a game- high five shots on goal for the Wolfpack.
The Hornets will next play at Fresno State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Their next home game will be Sunday, Sept. 19, at Noon against Utah State.
