SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Linda Sanchez and senior Jenae Kee helped lead Sacramento State to a 5-1 win over IUPUI, Sunday afternoon at the San Jose State tournament. For the Hornets, it was their first win of the season.Sacramento State got off to a quick start, scoring two goals in the first 16 minutes of the match. Kee provided the assist for sophomore Kelly Novak, who was in alone on Jaguar goalkeeper Jessie Mann. As Mann came off her line to contest the shot, Novak placed the ball past her.
Three minutes later Sacramento State (1-3) took a 2-0 lead when Sanchez was able to find the back of the net. After a Jaguar foul outside the penalty box, Sanchez scored on a direct free kick.
IUPUI (1-3) then pulled within a goal in the 20th minute, making the score 2-1. Midfielder Samantha Smiley scored from directly in front of the net, putting her shot past Hornet goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman. The match, which featured three quick goals, then went 42 minutes before someone would find the back of the net again.
Kee started the Hornets three-goal second half, when in the 62nd minute, she attempted a scissor kick and was successful at putting the shot past Mann.
Freshman Amanda Gray then recorded her first ever collegiate goal in the 84th minute on a breakaway and Sanchez added her second goal of the game in the 89th with a blast from 30-yards out.
Balzouman finished the game with three saves for the Hornets, while freshman goalkeeper Brittany Auernig saw her first action of the season and had four saves. Mann had a game-high seven saves.
The Hornets outshot IUPUI, 22-17, and took 13 shots on goal, their most this season. Sanchez had a game-high three shots on goal, while freshman Tiffany Fraser and Novak had two each.
Sacramento State will play their home opener at 4 p.m. vs. Nevada on Friday at Hornet Soccer Field.
