SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women’s soccer team went without a win this weekend after dropping its second match of the 2004 season. The Hornets fell to Cal State Northridge, 2-0, at Matador Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon. They were outshot by the Matadors 23-5.
Northridge (2-0-0) took the lead early when, in the 13th minute, Rebecca Hidalgo slipped in behind the Sacramento State defense and chipped in a shot over Hornet goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman.
Balzouman played all 90 minutes for Sacramento State (0-2-0) and tallied five saves. Of the Matadors’ 23 shots, seven were on goal.
Balzouman now has nine saves on the year after playing in two games.
The Hornet offense was led by midfielder Linda Sanchez, who took three shots on the afternoon forcing Northridge goalkeepers Karen Comstock and Natalie Cendejas to make a combined three saves. Hornet forwards Jennifer Iha and Kelly Novak each took one shot on goal.
The Matadors scored an insurance goal in the 72nd minute after Sacramento State was called for a foul in the penalty box.
Brianna Monka was able to convert the penalty with a shot to the left side past Balzouman.
The Hornets will try and earn their first win of the season this weekend at the San Jose State Tournament. On Friday the Hornets will play Miami University (Ohio) at 5 p.m. and will conclude the tournament on Sunday at noon with a match against IUPUI.
Sacramento State will then make its home debut Friday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. against Nevada.
