WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 2-1 TO LONG BEACH IN SEASON OPENER

8/27/2004

Long Beach State midfielder Allison Wiegand scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute as the Sacramento State women’s soccer team dropped its season opener 2-1 at Long Beach State on Friday night.

It was the season opener for both teams and first game for new Sacramento State head coach Katie Poynter.

Despite taking only four shots on goal, Sacramento State took advantage of its chances. In the 63rd minute, sophomore midfielder Maggie Murphy found senior forward Jennifer Iha on a one touch pass eight yards out from goal, beating 49er goalkeeper Meghan Hartwyk and tying the score at 1-1.

Sacramento State fought back after being down 1-0 early when 49er Kristin Travis scored an unassisted goal in the eighth minute.

Senior Hornet goalkeeper Michelle Balzouman made four saves during the game while Hartwyk was forced to make two.

Long Beach State had success on the offensive end taking eight corner kicks and tallying 13 shots.

The Hornets will play their second game of the season at CSU Northridge on Sunday at 2 p.m.
