MURPHY’S TWO GOALS LIFT WOMEN’S SOCCER OVER UTAH VALLEY STATE

Freshman forward Maggie Murphey scored a career-high two goals while freshman forward Kelly Novak and sophomore defender Mandi Siller also scored to give the Sacramento State women''s soccer team a 4-3 victory over Utah Valley State, Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The match marked the final home game for the Hornets in 2003.

Sacramento State is now 6-7-3 on the year while the Wolverines dropped to 8-4-1.

Utah Valley State got on the board first during the sixth minute when Megan Dickerson converted on a pass from Teryn Mendenhall.

Sacramento State answered in the 16th minute when Murphy scored her first goal off an assist from Sarah Moses. The assist was the first in Moses''s short career as a hornet, having only played in five previous matches.

Novak put the Hornets on top for the first time during the 22nd minute of the contest. Novak received a long pass down the left side of the field from Siller. Novak controlled the ball and beat a Utah Valley State defender before placing the ball into the back of the net.

The Hornets took a 3-1 lead in the 53rd minute when Murphy tallied her second goal of the contest. off an assist from junior midfielder Jenae Kee.

The Wolverines tied the contest at 3-3 after goals by Dickerson (57th minute) and Carolyn (67th minute), repectively.

Sacramento State took the lead for good in the 87th minute when Siller charged into a crowd during a corner kick from Kee. Miller slashed through defenders and headed the ball into the goal for the Hornets. The assist from Kee was her second of the match and her fourth of the season.

The Sacramento State defense repelled the Wolverines for the final three minutes of the match, sealing a victory for the squad.

Hornet goalkeeper Sephanie Shaw recorded her sixth victory of the season after collecting eight saves in the match.

Sacramento State will complete the regular season on the road beginning with Eastern Washington on Friday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m. before ending the weekend against Montana on Sunday, Nov. 2, at noon. The Hornets who currently sit seventh in the Big Sky Conference, are still in the hunt to receive the fourth and final seed of the conference tournament.
