WOMEN'S SOCCER BLANKS CHICO STATE, 2-0

8/22/2003

Sophomore Mandi Siller and junior Jennifer Iha each recorded a goal while freshman Jessica Hewins added two assists to lead the Sacramento State women’s soccer team to a 2-0 exhibition victory over Chico State Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. It marked the first win of the exhibition season for the Hornets after tying Pacific 1-1 on Aug. 19, at AA Stagg Stadium.

Siller put Sacramento State on the board first in the 40th minute after completing a header during a Hornet corner kick. Hewins struck a ball from the right corner to the far post, allowing Siller to head the ball past Chico State goalkeeper Angela Orr for the score.

Six minutes later, Iha gathered a cross from Hewins and broke clean from two Chico State defenders to seal the victory with a shot into the back of the net.

Sophomore Linda Sanchez controlled the midfield for the hornets by tallying six shots. Senior Amy Seely, junior Michelle Balzouman, and junior transfer Elizabeth Kirkland combined for shutout on five saves. Sacramento State outshot the Wildcats 21-13.

Sacramento State will take a week off before opening the 2003 regular season against Navy on Friday, Aug. 29, at Hornet Soccer Field.
