WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS SAN FRANCISCO, 1-0
9/9/2011

Caitlin Pulver scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over USF on Friday afternoon.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Caitlin Pulver scored on a free kick in the 78th minute to give the Sacramento State women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over San Francisco on Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.
The Hornets improve to 2-5 on the season while the Dons slide to 1-5.
After a foul just a few yards outside of the 18-yard box, Pulver lined up for a free kick. She placed a hard shot around the wall that hit the goalie square but the ball bounced out of San Francisco keeper Gabby Guaiumi's hands and rolled into the back of the net.
The score snapped the Hornets' three-game shutout streak.
It was a battle of two tough defenses throughout the first half and early second period as neither offense could take control. The Hornets' best opportunity in the first half was a Jordan Carlberg shot that ripped off the far post while the Dons' best look came right out of the gate in the second half when Mackenzie Krieser's shot bounced off the crossbar.
Sacramento State had a 15-9 edge in shots and 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. USF had a 4-3 lead in saves and both teams were whistled for seven fouls. The Hornets played the contest without midfielder Victoria Ramirez, who was issued a red card against Fresno State last weekend and had to sit out the game.
Sacramento State will rest Saturday before playing Creighton at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.
