WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 3-2 AT NORTHERN ARIZONA

10/15/2010

Kelsey O'Donnell scored her third goal this season but the Hornets lost 3-2 at NAU.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -
The Sacramento State women's soccer team lost their first Big Sky Conference match of the season, 3-2, at Northern Arizona on Friday afternoon. The Hornets fall to 5-7-1 (2-1-0 Big Sky) with the loss while the Lumberjacks improve to 7-3-3 (2-0-1) with the victory.

It was a high-scoring affair that saw the Hornets rally back to tie at halftime but a pair of second-half Lumberjack goals would give NAU the lead for good.

Megan Burg put the Hornets on the board and tied the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute when she took a well-placed Laura Bahno cross in the box and finished to the left side of the net. It was Burg's third goal of the season and Bahno's second assist in 2010.

The score was knotted up 1-1 at halftime but the Lumberjacks scored two goals within 1:06 of each other to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the 71st minute. Jenna Samora assisted on both as Sam Monahan and Carolyn Savage tallied scores. Monahan assisted on the first NAU goal, by Chelsea Bednarz.

In the 77th minute, Kelsey O'Donnell brought the Hornets within one goal. O'Donnell scored for the third time this season when she took a pass from Gabriela Trenton in the middle of the field and found herself wide open for a shot, which she placed to the bottom far post. The helper was Trenton's first career collegiate assist.

Despite the 3-2 score, there were not many shots as both teams showed patience offensively. NAU had a 13-9 edge in shots while each team had six shots on goal. NAU also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks and a 4-3 lead in saves. The Hornets were whistled for 16 fouls while NAU was called for 11 infractions.

The Hornets will stay on the road this weekend as they play Northern Colorado at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
