WOMEN'S SOCCER ROLLS AGAINST MENLO COLLEGE, WINS 9-0

Jessica Castano scored her first career goal in a 9-0 victory against Menlo College.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Hornet record book will have to be reworked after the Sacramento State women's soccer team knocked off Menlo College 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The Hornets improve to 2-4-1 on the season while Menlo falls to 0-2-1.
It was the most goals ever scored by the Hornets in a single game while the 9-0 win is the largest margin of victory in program history.
A total of seven players scored for the Hornets, including Jessica Castano's first career goal, as Sacramento State out-shot the Oaks 36-5 in the game. Elece McBride and Leah Larot both scored twice while Victoria Ramirez netted three assists to tie the Hornets' single game record.
The rout was on early as McBride netted the first goal of the game in the sixth minute off a cross from Ramirez. Felicia Novoa added her first goal of 2010 in the 10th minute after she used her heel to flick a shot backwards to the far post. Megan Burg then also scored her first goal of 2010 in the 15th minute to make it 3-0. Larot then scored less than a minute later off a give-and-go with Ramirez on a breakaway.
Ramirez netted her own goal in the 23rd minute after Novoa beat the keeper to the near post and then slotted a pass across the net and just out of reach of the final Menlo defender. Larot scored again in the 25th minute off a pass from Erin Tarantino, who collected the ball on a rebound, and Jordan Carlberg scored on a breakaway set up when Ramirez chipped a pass over the Menlo defense to make it 7-0 at halftime.
Castano scored her first goal in green and gold in the 74th minute on a one-touch shot and McBride, after scoring the first goal in the game, ended the day with another goal, the only unassisted score in the contest.
In addition to shots, Sacramento State held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks while Menlo had a 16-3 advantage in saves. Goal keeper Savannah Abercrombie recorded the clean sheet victory, her second shutout of the season and 17th of her career.
Records set or matched on Sunday against Menlo College:
- The nine goals was a team single game record. The previous was eight scores at Mills on Oct. 25, 1994.
- The 9-0 win was the largest margin of victory in program history. The previous was at Mills on Oct. 25, 1994.
- Victoria Ramirez matched the Sacramento State single game record for assists with three.
- Ramirez and Leah Larot each tallied five points in the game, tying them for seventh in program history for most points in a single game.
- Savannah Abercrombie extended her own school record with the 17th shutout of her career.
