FORMER WOMEN'S SOCCER STAR KATIE McCOY SIGNS WITH STJARNAN F.C. IN ICELAND
4/14/2010
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Former Hornet women's soccer star Katie McCoy, who owns the schools single-season records for both goals (14) and assists (7), has inked a contract with Stjarnan F.C. in Garoabaer, Iceland.
McCoy joins Stjarnan after playing the preseason for the Atlanta Beat of Women's Professional Soccer.
"I was dissapointed going through the preseason with Atlanta and being the last person cut," McCoy said. "Even though I knew I could come back to Sacramento and go back to my job, this opportunity came up and I'm excited to continue pursuing my soccer career."
McCoy, who played at Sacramento State from 2004-07, finished her career with the Hornets as the school's all-time leader in assists (22), and ranked second in career points (76) and third in career goals (27). She was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive MVP as a senior in 2007, scoring a school record 14 goals while dishing out a school record tying seven assists.
"I've heard from other Americans who've played in Iceland, and they have talked about it as a positive and fun experience," McCoy said. "I look forward to the challenge."
A native of La Mesa, Calif., McCoy was the first soccer player to be named Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week three times in a row, and set a new mark by earning the award four times during her senior season and six times in her career. She was just the seventh player in conference history to earn first team all-conference honors for three straight seasons, after being named a second team selection during her freshman year in 2004.
She also received the 2007 Golden Boot Award, an award given to the player who led the Big Sky in total points in conference play. McCoy tallied five goals, earning 10 points and a 1.72 points per game average in conference matches.
