The Sacramento State women’s soccer team will look to regain their winning ways when they face the Miami University Redhawks and the Iona Gaels this weekend at Hornet Soccer Field. Miami enters the contest 1-4, while Iona (0-7) will take the pitch looking for their first win.

SACRAMENTO STATE FALLS TO SAN JOSE STATE 1-0
The Sacramento State women’s soccer team fell to the San Jose Spartans in overtime, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Spartan Stadium.
The two teams fought through the first 90 minutes with no score, before the Spartans found the winning score in the first overtime period. Roxy Kamal sent a through ball to the foot of Kaila Waitley, who found Emmy Belding, who was able to put a ball past Hornet ‘keeper Jenny Lawrence
for the game winner in the 94th minute.
The Spartans outshot the Hornets in the first half 10-3, but Sacramento State returned the favor in half number two, outshooting the Spartans 9-7. The Hornets were led by freshman Elece McBride and sophomore Leah Larot, who was playing in her home town, who tallied two shots apiece. Senior Kara Taylor and McBride added the Hornets only two shots on frame.
Lawrence played well in goal for the Hornets in the loss, totalling six saves on the day. San Jose State received a match-high nine shots from Kamal, while Lauren Sanchez totalled five.

CAUSEWAY CLASH GOES TO UC DAVIS 1-0
Behind a goal in the 63rd minute, UC Davis defeated the Sacramento State women’s soccer team by a score of 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 12 at Hornet Soccer Field.
The first half saw both rivals have chances to light up the scoreboard that were turned away. Sacramento State had the first scoring chance in the 14th minute, but senior Sarah Howard’s header went off of the crossbar, keeping the score tied at 0-0. The Aggies best chance game in the 38th minute, but Holly Scott’s header found the awaiting arms of Hornet senior ‘keeper Jenny Lawrence, keeping the two teams scoreless into intermission.
The second half saw both team jostle back and forth over possession until the 63rd minute, when the Aggies’ Marisa Boge took off on a breakaway, dribbling the ball some 30 yards before pushing a shot toward the far post for the games first goal, giving the Aggies a 1-0 advantage. Despite outshooting the Aggies 10-5 in the second half, the Hornets could not find the equalizer, and the Aggies took the rivalry game home for the second straight year.
For the match, UC Davis posted 18 shots with four on goal, while the Hornets notched 15 shots with three on frame. Howard led the Hornets with three shots, including a shot on frame and another off the crossbar, while sophomore Laura Bahno and senior Missy Matzen had two shots apiece.

HORNETS SELECTED FIRST IN PRESEASON POLL FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
The Sacramento State women’s soccer team was selected to finish first in the Big Sky Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, released August 12 by the conference.
The Hornets received five of seven possible first place votes, as coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team, and 45 total points. Northern Colorado earned two first place votes and 37 total points, while Weber State collected the final first place vote and 37 points to tie for second place. A first place vote was worth seven points, a second place vote worth six points, and so on down the line, with a seventh place vote worth one point.
Northern Arizona was tabbed to finish fourth, followed by Portland State, Idaho State, Montana and Eastern Washington. The top four teams in the conference standings advance to the Big Sky Tournament, to be held in November at the site of the Big Sky regular season champion.
The Hornets were also the favorite to win the conference in the preseason coaches poll a season ago, and did not disappoint. The team collected a 12-4-5 record, the best in school history, while posting an unbeaten 4-0-3 mark during the Big Sky regular season.
The team hosted the Big Sky Tournament, and defeated Portland State (2-1) and Northern Colorado (3-0) to pick up the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Sacramento State returns six all-conference performers, and 8-of-11 starters from last year’s championship squad. Senior Kara Taylor, a three-time all-Big Sky Conference performer and 2005 Big Sky co-Defensive Player of the Year, has started all 61 matches the Hornets have competed in during her career. Junior forward Kim Kemper is the team’s leading returning scorer, tallying four goals and a school-record tying seven assists during her sophomore campaign.
Senior Sarah Howard, a three-time all-conference honoree who was tabbed to the Big Sky second team in 2007, will anchor the defensive midfield during her final season in the Green and Gold. She’ll be joined by senior midfielder Missy Matzen, junior goalkeeper Mandy Trojan and junior defender Christina Trenton on the Hornet defense, who were all honorable mention all-conference picks in 2007.
Another player to watch will be senior Kayelyn Satkowski, who was the team’s leading scorer in 2006 with nine goals and three assists, but missed 2007 with a knee injury. The Hornets also added to the equation six highly touted recruits and a Division I transfer, and welcome three additional returning redshirts.
