WOMEN’S SOCCER DEFEATS BIG SKY POWERHOUSE MONTANA, 3-2, IN OT

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Forward Lisa Wrightsman’s goal in the fifth minute of overtime gave women's soccer a 3-2 victory over defending conference champion Montana, Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The game marked the first time the Hornets have defeated the Grizzlies in six meetings. Coming into the contest, Montana had tallied a 24-2-1 all-time record against Big Sky opponents, including a 19-1-1 all-time record in the regular season and five consecutive shutouts in conference play.

The Hornets got on the board first with a goal by junior forward Lori Kerswell from 30 yards out in the 10th minute to gain the early momentum. Senior midfielder Lisa Casey then added a goal in the 33rd minute off an assist by junior midfielder Summer Douglas to give the team a 2-0 halftime advantage.

In the second period, Montana finally got on the scoreboard in the 56th minute when forward Amy Wronski stole a goalkeeper clear-out and put the ball in the net to get the Grizzlies back into the game. Forward Heather lson sent the contest into overtime with a goal in the 76th minute off an assist from defender Kerri Houck.

Wrightsman, a sophomore from Elk Grove, Calif., then scored the game winner off an assist from junior midfielder Naomi Ennis.

Women's soccer is now a school-record 7-3-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Sky. The best Hornet mark after 12 games was a 8-4 record last season when the team finished 8-8-1 on the year.

The team will look to improve on their 4-1-2 record at Hornet Field against Portland State Sunday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m.
