WOMEN’S SOCCER DROPS FIRST HOME GAME OF SEASON, 3-2

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Alex Richey’s goal in the 76th minute gave UC Santa

Barbara (5-5-1) its first road win of the season, 3-2, and ended teh

Hornet’s 3-0-2 record at Hornet Field Sunday afternoon.

Women's soccer had taken their first advantage of the game in the 71st

minute when defenseman Marisa Mercado scored her first collegiate goal,

off an assist by Desirae Feria, to make it 2-1. The Gauchos answered

right back with a goal by Inez Oriol in the 75th minute to even it up at

two, right before Richey’s game winner.

Earlier in the contest, UC Santa Barbara struck first in the 33rd minute

when Jen Codington’s ball passed through the posts off an assist by

Annika Wright. On the ensuing kickoff, Hornet midfielder Lisa Casey

stole the ball from a fallen Gaucho defender and dropped a tear drop

over the head of goalkeeper Lindsay Barr from 20 yards out to make the

halftime score 1-1.

The loss drops the Hornets to 6-3-2 on the season with only Big Sky

competition remaining.

The team will next host Montana of Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. at Hornet

Field.
