SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Lisa Wrightsman and Kristin Hoffman each scored two goals and Brittany Hijlkema and Heidi Clabaugh each added a goal as Sacramento State defeated Memphis, 6-2, in its season opener at Hornet Field Friday night.
The six goals in one game was the most for Sacramento State since a 6-6 tie with Weber State on Sept. 15, 1996. Gk Hijlkema opened the game with a penalty kick in the 17th minute after being taken down from behind by a Tiger defender. Wrightsman and Hoffman continued the scoring barrage with goals in the 25th and 42nd minute, respectively, giving the Hornets a 3-0 halftime advantage.
The Hornets scored six goals before Memphis’ Jennifer Goff and Candice Spinolas scored in the final 13 minutes to end the game at 6-2.
Goalkeeper Amy Seely, starting in the first game of her career with the Hornets, shut out Memphis in the first half before being replaced by Tiffany Genovese at 61:50.
