SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior forward Kayelyn Satkowski was named Co-Big Sky Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week after a three-goal performance over the weekend. In Friday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Boise State, Satkowski helped the Hornets overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half, scoring the team’s first goal in the 49th minute and tying the match with her second strike in the 69th minute. Satkowski combined with Maggie Murphy and Kelly Novak to find an opening at the top of Boise State’s box for her first goal, placing her blast in the upper corner.
Satkowski tied the match, and put away her sixth strike of the season, after a quick combination with freshman Kim Kemper, reaching a loose ball just five yards in front of the net.
In Sunday’s 2-1 overtime victory over Cal Poly, Satkowski calmly gave Sacramento State a 1-0 lead in the 71st minute after working with freshman Beverly Goebel to pressure the Mustangs’ back line. After forcing a turnover, Goebel threaded a pass to Satkowski, eluding a Cal Poly defender and goalkeeper, and leaving an open net for Satkowski’s team-leading seventh goal.
The Hornets are now 6-1-0 when Satkowski scores or records an assist, with the Sacramento native posting career highs in goals (seven) and assists (three). Not only does the 2004 Casa Roble graduate lead the Hornets with seven goals, her 17 points also top the conference along with Weber State’s Linsey McFarland.
This is the first time Satkowski has received Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors. She shares the award with Montana’s Meghan Chambers, who recorded five points in one game, scoring two goals and adding one assist in the Grizzlies’ 3-0 win over North Dakota State.
It is the second time a Hornet has received the award this season, with junior forward Katie McCoy earning the honor on Sept. 12.
Sacramento State opens Big Sky Conference play this weekend at P.E. Playfield, the home of two-time defending champion Weber State on Thursday, Oct. 5. The Hornets then travel to Pocatello to play Idaho State on Saturday.
In 2005 Sacramento State finished second in the Big Sky standings with a program-best 4-1-1 record.
