This is the second signing class for head coach Katie Poynter, who in 2005, led the Hornets to an 8-8-3 record and the team’s best finish since 2000. Each signee will enroll at Sacramento State in the fall of 2006.The Hornets’ first signee is local product Kim Kemper, a senior forward at Bella Vista High School. As a sophomore in 2004, she led Bella Vista to a CAL championship with 12 goals and six assists. For three years, Kemper has played for the San Juan Spirits under head coach Derek Evans. In 2005, she helped the Spirits to the 2005 River City Cup championship and three consecutive Cal Cup championships (2003-05). The Spirits were also the 2004 Cal North Premier League Champions and three-time winners of the US Club Regional Championship.
“Kim adds a very different dimension to our front line,” Poynter said. “She is a tireless worker, and extremely athletic. We feel that Kim is a player that will improve herself every time she steps on the field.”
Katie Rorabaugh, a midfielder from Walnut, Calif., has the ability to play in the midfield and on the back line and has been in the state ODP pool since 2001. In 2002, she competed with the ODP State team and attended regional camp. Currently a senior at Walnut High School, she has played three seasons for head coach Lorraine Hanson. In 2005 as a junior, she was named first team all-CIF and first team all-San Antonio League after leading Walnut to its third consecutive undefeated league record and championship. Rorabaugh will join former teammates Sarah Howard and Ashley Rosenbery who she played with for the OJSC Northstars.
“Katie is a highly recruited athlete that we feel will fill a vital role for us in the central midfield,” Poynter said. “She is calm under pressure, has outstanding vision of the field and performs with the composure of a great playmaker.”
Christina Trenton from San Juan Capistrano, Calif., is the Hornets’ third signee. A senior at Capistrano Valley High School, Trenton was named defensive player of the year for the Cougars in 2003 and 2005. For the past two seasons, she earned all-South Coast League honors after helping lead San Juan Capistrano to the 2004 CIF Division I co-championship. Trenton last played for the Laguna Hills Eclipse, winning two national championships in 2003 and 2005. The Eclipse also won the Las Vegas College Showcase, Coast Soccer League championship and were California Premier Tournament Finalists. She was also a part of the 2003 and 2004 ODP pools.
“Christina is a tenacious and hard nosed defender,” Poynter said. “She is a vocal leader and organizes extremely well from the back line. She is outgoing, and her knowledge of the game and experience winning national championships has prepared her well to compete at this level.”
Sacramento State has also signed Beverly Goebel out of Moreno Valley High School. As a junior she was named Mountain View League MVP and earned all-league honors her sophomore season. The forward/midfielder has played 12 years for Freedom United under head coach Ted Small. In 2004, she helped lead Freedom United to the 2004 Nike Harvest Cup and Coast Soccer League championship.
“Beverly is a tall, strong and versatile player who can make an impact on the team,” Poynter said. “She can be a playmaker as well as a goal scorer, and we are excited to see where she fits in. She has a passion for soccer that is rare, and she works very hard to be the best she can be. Beverly is coachable, and will do whatever it takes to continue to improve while aspiring to play at the highest level possible.”
Mandy Trojan rounds out the Hornets’ 2006 recruiting class. The only goalkeeper in the class, Trojan is a senior at Los Alamitos High School, playing for head coach Pat Rossi. The past two seasons, she helped lead the Griffins to the Sunset League championship. In 2005, Los Alamitos was crowned the CIF Division I champions as well. Trojan played with the OJSC Northstars last year and was a member of F.C. Santa Barbara for the previous seven seasons. In 2005, she helped the Northstars to the Nomads and Pleasanton Showcase championships.
“Mandy will come in and immediately challenge Jenny Lawrence for the starting spot in goal,” Poynter said. “We wanted that position to be competitive and we think that we''ve accomplished that goal. Mandy has a strong presence in the box, good size, and she organizes her defense with confidence. She has a great work ethic on the field and in the classroom.
“We believe this class will come in and make a very strong impact on our program,” Poynter said. “The recruits have a high level of experience, and their personalities will fit right into the chemistry we have built. The rookies are joining a group of very good leaders, who I believe will help them find early success. We are very excited about this class, and can''t wait for the 2006 season to begin.”
