MANTON AND McCOY NAMED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL DISTRICT VIII TEAM

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State men’s soccer defender Jesse Manton and women’s soccer forward Katie McCoy received ESPN The Magazine All-Academic honors, it was announced today.

Manton, a 5-foot-11 left back, was named to the Academic All-District VIII first team. In his third year with the Hornets, he is a business major with a 3.65 gpa and has played in 12 matches this season, helping Sacramento State to its best season in 10 years with an 8-6-1 record.

In his time with the Hornets, the Santa Rosa, Calif., native has played in 32 matches, starting 25, and has registered one goal and two assists.

His play on the back line is one of the main reasons Sacramento State has posted a program-record six-match winning streak on its home field this season, including four shutouts. The team has also allowed just 17 goals, capable of breaking the program’s record of fewest goals against with 20 set in 1992.

The men’s District VIII team is comprised of the top-12 Division I men’s soccer players who compete in colleges located in Alaska, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Hawaii, Utah and Washington. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have at least a 3.2 gpa. Manton will now be placed on All-America ballot.

The men’s team finishes its season with three consecutive home matches, hosting UNLV at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4 and the second-ranked New Mexico Lobos at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6.

McCoy, the Hornets’ leading scorer, was named to the Academic All-District VIII third team. A sophomore forward from La Mesa, Calif., McCoy is a business major with a 3.7 gpa and led Sacramento State with seven goals and five assists this year.

She helped the team advance to the Big Sky postseason tournament for the first time since 2001 and post its best overall record (8-8-3) since 2000.

The women’s District VIII section was comprised of a first, second and third team.

The Hornets’ season was ended with a 2-1 loss to Northern Arizona on at the Big Sky Conference Tournament on Thursday.
