KATIE McCOY NAMED CO-BIG SKY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

10/24/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sophomore forward Katie McCoy was named co-Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping Sacramento State to its fourth consecutive victory and third Big Sky win over the weekend.

McCoy scored both goals in the Hornets’ 2-1 victory at Portland State on Sunday. The La Mesa, Calif., native recorded her first goal on a 12-yard shot assisted by Kelly Novak in the 13th minute. Later in the second half she scored her second goal when Sacramento State was awarded a penalty kick.

The victory over the Vikings allowed the Hornets to hold on to their first place standing in the Big Sky with an undefeated record of 3-0-1. It was Sacramento State’s second win on the road this year, dating back to the team’s season-opening 1-0 victory at UC Davis on Aug. 26. It was also the team’s first victory over the Vikings since 2001 and first win in Portland since 1997.

On Friday, McCoy scored once and assisted on a second goal in the Hornets’ 5-1 victory over Cal State East Bay.

She shares the weekly honor with Weber State’s Lindsey McFarland, who registered an assist in the Wildcats 2-1 victory over Eastern Washington, before scoring the game-winner in a 1-0 win over Montana.

McCoy, a 2004 graduate of Grossmont HS, leads Sacramento State with six goals and five assists, ranking her third in Big Sky Conference scoring with 17 points. In the last five games, she has tallied four goals and three assists.

It is the third consecutive week that a Hornet has been named Big Sky Player of the Week, with Novak earning the honor on Oct. 17 and Sarah Howard receiving the honor on Oct. 10. Senior midfielder Linda Sanchez (Sept. 6) and freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence (Aug. 29) were also named Player of the Week earlier in the year.

The team’s 7-6-3 record is its best mark since 2000 and its 3-0-1 start in conference is its best in program history.

The Hornets will look to maintain their four-match winning streak and five-game unbeaten streak on the road at Idaho State (4-10-1, 1-2-1) on Thursday and at Weber State (10-4-1, 3-1-0) on Saturday.
