PHILLIPS SCORES, BUT WOMEN’S SOCCER CAN’T GET EQUALIZER IN 2-1 LOSS TO SAINT MARY’S
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Playing its final tune-up match before beginning Big Sky Conference play, Sacramento State fell 2-1 to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.The Gaels improve to 6-4-1 on the year, while the Hornets fall to 3-6-2.
Saint Mary’s Gen Hollis scored her fourth goal of 2005 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half when she collected her own rebound that came off the post and put it past Hornet freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence.
A quick score at the start of the second half gave Saint Mary’s a 2-0 lead, when Nikki Schrey picked up her fourth goal of the year on an 18-yard shot to the far post.
The Hornets responded in the 59th minute when sophomore Rebeccah Phillips scored her third goal of the season on a penalty kick. Phillips, a Lake Forest, Calif., native now leads the team with three goals and one assist. Sacramento State was awarded the shot after junior Kelly Novak’s strike hit a Saint Mary’s defender in the arm inside the penalty box.
The Gaels outshot the Hornets 12-3, but only registered four of their shots on goal. Junior Linda Sanchez and sophomore Kayelyn Satkowski each tallied a shot for Sacramento State.
The Hornets open play in the Big Sky Conference with a three-match homestand that begins on Friday against Eastern Washington at 3 p.m. Sacramento State will then host Montana at noon on Sunday.
