McCOY SCORES GAME WINNER IN WOMEN’S SOCCER 2-1 VICTORY OVER IDAHO

9/27/2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore Katie McCoy netted the game winner during the 83rd minute in Sacramento State’s 2-1 victory over Idaho on Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.

McCoy turned the corner and passed two Vandal defenders on her way toward goal, where one-on-one with Idaho goalkeeper Lindsay Smith, she tapped the ball left as Smith dove to the right.

It was McCoy’ second goal of the season and the La Mesa, Calif., native now leads the team in scoring with two goals and two assists.

It was McCoy’s work that set up the game-tying goal in the 68th minute when she dribbled along the endline and cut the ball back to sophomore Rebeccah Phillips five-yards out from goal. With Smith out of position, Phillips hit the ball far post for her second goal of 2005.

The Hornets are now 3-4-2 on the season, equaling their win total from 2004. Idaho falls to 2-7-0.

Sacramento State dominated much of the match, taking 19 shots compared to the Vandals three, but Idaho scored a break in the 41st minute when Alyson South was taken down in the box. Hornet freshman goalkeeper Jenny Lawrence guessed correctly on the penalty kick taken by Idaho’s Jenny Springer, but couldn’t keep it out of the net, giving the Vandals a 1-0 edge at the half.

Smith was forced to make seven saves during the match, while Lawrence made just one behind defenders Mandi Siller, Marissa Condren and Kara Taylor.

McCoy and midfielders Amber Dragomir and Maggie Murphy each finished with two shots on goal, while Phillips led the team with four shots (one on goal).

Junior Kelly Novak missed the game winner by inches when her shot in the 75th minute cleared Smith, but was kept out by the crossbar.

After not scoring multiple goals in their first seven matches, the Hornets have now scored at least two goals in their last two matches and have also come back from first-half deficits.

Sacramento State hits the road for it next two game at noon on Sunday at Pacific.
