MCCOY NAMED TO THE BIG SKY ALL-CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM

11/4/2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Freshman midfielder Katie McCoy was named to the Big Sky all-conference second team, it was announced today.

McCoy started in 15 of her 16 appearances this season and finished second on the squad in scoring, with two goals and two assists. McCoy had a knack for theatrics, with both of her goals coming as game-winners in the final minute of play.

Sacramento State also had two players, sophomore Natalia Romo and junior Linda Sanchez, who earned all-Big Sky honorable mention honors. It was the second-straight year Sanchez, a central midfielder, was given the honor.

The North Highlands, Calif., native was the only player to start all of Sacramento State’s 18 games this season and she also led the team in scoring with two goals and three assists. She was sixth in the conference, averaging 2.0 shots per game.

Romo, a Las Vegas, Nev., native returned to the field to play 18 games in 2004, after redshirting the 2003 season because of shin fractures.

Romo played in several different positions in the defensive backfield, and finished the year as the defense’s center back.

Montana’s Lindsay Winans was named Big Sky Offensive MVP after leading the conference with 10 goals and Wendy Stuker, also of Montana, was named Defensive MVP.

The Grizzlies, who finished the season with a 7-7-2 overall record and 3-2-1 conference record, led the Big Sky with five players selected to the first team.

Juli Edwards of Portland State was named Newcomer of the Year in the Big Sky.

The sections were made in a vote by the conference’s seven head coaches.
