WOMEN’S SOCCER SCORELESS IN 2-0 LOSS TO CAL POLY

9/18/2004

Sacramento State was outshot 21 to six in a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly on Friday night in San Luis Obispo.

The Hornets (2-6) were able to hold the Mustangs scoreless in the second half, but allowed two early first half goals from the Mustangs (4-1-2) that secured the win.

The scoring began in the 15th minute when Sharon Day scored her sixth goal of the season for Cal Poly. Day was able to place a header past Hornet goalkeeper Brittany Auernig off a deflected pass from Heidi McQuitty.

Auernig, who was starting in goal for the first time this season, had a game-high eight saves. Junior Mandi Siller led the Hornet defense, starting her eighth-straight game as center back.

The second goal for Cal Poly came from Becky Clark later in the half. Clark collected a loose ball in front of the box and found the back of the net to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Mustangs.

Sacramento State was led by Kelly Novak, who recorded three shots. Clark led the Mustangs with four shots, two of which fell on goal.

Mustang goalkeeper Jessica Murray recorded two saves in her shutout.

The Hornets will return home for their fourth match in a span of eight days to play Utah State at noon on Sunday at Hornet Field. The women’s match will be followed by the Sacramento State men’s soccer team, who will play Cal Poly at 2:30 p.m.
