WOMEN'S SOCCER EARNS SIX ALL-BIG SKY HONORS

Six members of the Sacramento State women’s soccer team were named to the all-Big Sky Conference honorable mention team, it was announced today. The six players include freshmen Katie Burton and Maggie Murphy, sophomores Mandi Siller and Linda Sanchez and juniors Sela Suarez and Jenae Kee. The six honorable mention selections were the most in program history (1994-present).

Burton, a defender from Las Vegas, was a strong presence for the Hornet defensive backfield. She competed in 14 matches including 13 starts before sitting out the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Offensively, she tallied four shots including two on goal.

Siller, a defender from Sacramento, started and played in every game this season for the Hornets. Siller tallied four goals and two assists when moving up to play on the offensive end of the field. She finished second on the squad with four goals and fourth with 10 points.

Suarez, a midfielder from Folsom, Calif., played in all 18 games including 17 starts after transferring from Cal State Stanislaus. Suarez, who also spent time as a defender, tallied two assists and four shots (two on goal) during the year. Her assist total places third on the squad.

Kee, a midfielder from Roseville Calif., started and played in all 18 games this season after transferring from San Francisco State. She led the Hornets with 13 total points while also tying for first with five assists and tying for second with four goals. One of three team captains, Kee was also third on the team with 17 shots, 10 of which were on goal.

Murphy, a forward from Walnut Creek Calif., played in 18 games including 15 starts in her first season with the program. She tied for the team lead with five assists while also placing third in points (11) and goals (3).

Sanchez, a midfielder from North Highlands, Calif., appeared in 14 games (13 starts) on the season. Also one of the three-team captains, Sanchez sat out four games due to a knee injury but managed to finish the season with one goal and one assist.

Sacramento State ended the 2003 season with a 6-9-3 overall record and a 0-4-2 mark in the Big Sky. The Hornets concluded the season with single-digit losses for the first time since 2000. The squad also improved on its 3-13-1 record in head coach Karen Hanks’ first season.
