WOMEN’S SOCCER ENDS SEASON WITH 3-1 LOSS TO MONTANA

Montana scored once in the first half and twice more in the second, as the Grizzlies handed Sacramento State a season ending 3-1 loss, Sunday afternoon at South Campus Field. The Hornets end their season 6-9-3 overall and 0-3-2 in the Big Sky Conference while the Grizzlies improve to 7-10-2, 3-2-0 .

The Wolverines got on the board during the first minute of the contest , when the Hornets accidentally played a ball into their own net.

The Hornets tied the game during the 58th minute when sophomore defender Mandy Siller put a header into the goal off an assist by junior midfielder Janae Kee. The assist is the fifth of the year for Kee and it ties her with freshman forward Maggie Murphy for the team lead. The assist also gives Kee thirteen total points to finish as the points leader for the Hornets.

The deciding goal came in the 58th minute when Montana’s Kelly Fullerton, assisted by Casey Joyner made the score 2-1 in favor of the Grizz. Montana added an insurance goal during the 73rd minute with an unassisted goal by Tara Schwager.

With the end of the 2003 season the Hornets lose four seniors, Jill Kollman, Nicole Novoa, Stacey Rowell and Amy Seely.

Novoa a native of Sacramento Calif., appeared in thirteen games for the Hornets this season starting in one and took five shots on goal. For her Hornet career Novoa took ten shots and made one goal.

Kollman a native of Elk Grove Calif., played in two games for Sacramento State this year. The four year player scored one goal during the 2000 season.

Rowell a native of Dove Canyon Calif., ends her four year career with the Hornets having not missed a single game. She finished third all time in the Hornet career record book starting in 65 matches. The three-time all-Big Sky selection finished with 69 total games played.

Seely played 43 games in goal for the Hornets starting in 42. The native of West Linn, Ore., holds several Hornet records that include most shut outs for a single season (4.5). She holds second place in all time saves (251) and also places second and fifth all time in single game saves (14,11).

Coach Karen Hanks in her second season with Sacramento State doubled the number of wins from the 2002 season in which the Hornets finished with a 3-13-1 record. The Hornets will return 10 of 11 starters next season.
