WOMEN’S SOCCER COMES UP SHORT IN 2-1 OVERTIME LOSS TO IDAHO STATE

10/26/2003

Jamie Meehan''s goal in the 99th minute led Idaho State to a 2-1 sudden death victory over the Hornet women''s soccer team, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.

Sacramento State is now 5-7-3 overall and 0-2-2 in the Big Sky while the Bengals improved to 7-8-1, 3-2.

The Hornets got on the board first during the 74th minute when Mandi Siller and teammate Jessica Hewins combined for a goal. Siller gathered a 35-yard free kick from Hewins and placed the ball into the right side of the net. Hewins''s assist came directly after checking in for Novak, who was injured on the previous play.

Idaho State tied the score in the 86th minute when Jenifer Loo connected on a free kick in front of the Hornet goal. Loo placed a free kick into a wall of Hornet defenders, the ball deflected off the top of the wall and up over the outstretched hands of Hornet goalkeeper Stephanie Shaw.

The Hornets were unable to score another goal despite putting seven shots on Bengal goalkeeper Shannon Boyle. Hornet midfielder Linda Sanchez led all players with five shots, two of which were on goal.

During the ninth minute of sudden-death overtime, Meehan stole the ball in front of the Hornet goal and kicked it into the bottom left side of the net for the win.

Sacramento State will next host non-conference opponent Utah Valley State Tuesday, Oct. 28, 1 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field.
