Freshman forward Lisamarie La Vallee and freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Shaw were named Big Sky Conference Players of the Week after leading the women’s soccer team to wins over 19th-ranked Utah and San Francisco last weekend. With the wins, Sacramento State currently leads the Big Sky with a 4-4-1 overall record.La Vallee earned Offensive Player of the Week honors while Shaw was named Defensive Player of the Week. It marked the first time two Hornet players swept the Big Sky offfensive and defensive awards since goalkeeper Amy Seely and forward Lisa Wrightsman were recognized in 2001.
La Vallee, a native of Walnut Creek, Calif., scored the game-winning goal in the Hornets’ 1-0 victory over the Utes on Oct. 5. She also recorded two goals during the Hornets’ 4-2 win over San Francisco on Oct. 3. For La Vallee, who leads the team with five goals and 10 points, it was the second time this season she had scored multiple goals in a contest. She also scored twice during a 3-1 win over UC Davis on Aug. 31. The forward currently ranks third in the conference in scoring and needs only four more goals to tie for fifth in the Hornet season record book.
Shaw, a native of San Pedro, Calif., earned her first collegiate shutout with eight saves against Utah. She also led all keepers with 10 saves in the Hornets’ win over San Francisco. The Big Sky leader with 62 saves, she is currently 4-3-1 on the year with a 1.44 goals-against-average and has not lost a game in her previous four contests. Shaw, who tallied a career-high 11 saves against Navy, needs only 26 more saves to tie for fourth in the Hornet season record book.
Sacramento State will look to improve its season-high two-game winning streak when the Hornets travel to Saint Mary’s on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 3 p.m. The squad will then open Big Sky play on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m., when it travels to Portland State. The Hornets, who have surpassed their win total from last year, will also look to inch above the .500 mark for the first time since the 2000 season.
