10/5/2003

Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Shaw earned her first collegiate shutout and freshman Lisamarie La Vallee scored her third goal in two games as the Sacramento State women'' soccer team defeated 19th-ranked Utah, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. The win marked the 100th career victory for Hornet head coach Karen Hanks.

Sacramento State improved to 4-4-1 on the year while the Utes dropped to 9-2.

La Vallee scored the contest''s only goal in the eighth minute after connecting on a long, high pass from sophomore Linda Sanchez. With two defenders on her, La Vallee won the pass from Sanchez and slipped a shot by the out stretched arms of Utah goalkeeper Kaycie Zimmerman into the bottom left side of the net.

Utah was unable to score on the Hornets despite being up a player for the final eleven minutes of the contest. Senior Nicole Novoa was ejected from the game with a redcard for a dangerous play with the Utah goalkeeper. After a diving save by Zimmerman, Novoa attempted to stop herself but slid into the keeper with one foot extended.
