The Sacramento State women’s soccer team signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, it was announced today. The group represents the first recruiting class for the Hornet program under head coach Karen Hanks. Each signee will enroll at Sacramento State in the fall of 2003.Sarah Moses, Kelly Novak, Maggie Murphy, Lisa La Vallee and Stephanie Shaw make up the incoming freshman class while Elizabeth Kirkland and Catherine Sherwin will join the squad as junior college transfers.
Moses, a native of Roseville, Calif., is a defender from Oakmont High School in the Pioneer Valley League. Moses also competed for the Placer Prestige ’85 club team. A four-year varsity starter, Moses earned team most improved honors in 2000. Moses also earned field MVP honors from 1999-2001 as a member of track and field squad.
Novak is a forward from Clayton Valley High School in Concord, Calif. She earned first team all-Bay Valley Athletic League honors after leading CVHS to a 2002 BVAL title and finishing second in the conference in scoring. Novak, a team captain as a junior and senior, was named team offensive player of the year after finishing with 15 goals and 18 assists as a junior. Novak also led the U-17 Walnut Creek Strikers to a pair of State Premier League Championships in 2001 and 2002. She registered 47 goals and 16 assists during that span. Novak was also a member of the District IV team from 1999-2001 and was a state pool player in 1999 and 2001.
Murphy is a midfielder from Las Lomas High School in Walnut Creek, Calif. Murphy was named first team all-Diablo Valley Athletic League and team offensive MVP in 2002. She also earned all-DVAL honorable mention honors in 2001. Murphy is a member of the Cal Northstars club team and has been an Olympic Development Program player for the past four years.
La Vallee, who will see time as a forward and defender, is a utility player from Las Lomas High School where she teamed with Maggie Murphy. La Vallee was named second team all-DVAL and team MVP as a junior. She also earned DVAL honorable mention and team defensive MVP honors in 2000 and 2001. A team captain from 2001-2003, La Vallee has also earned scholar-athlete honors all four years. She is also a member of the D.V.S.C Heat club team.
Shaw is a goalkeeper from San Pedro High School in San Pedro, Calif. She earned first team all-Marine League honors as a junior and second team honors as a sophomore. Shaw is also a member of FRAM, one of the top premier club teams in Southern California.
Sherwin is a forward from Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Wash. Sherwin recorded 33 goals and 14 assists during her career while leading the Warriors to a 35-9-3 overall record in two seasons. Sherwin, a two-time all-NWAACC selection, tallied 23 goals and four assists during her sophomore season.
Kirkland is a goalkeeper from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. A team captain her sophomore season, Kirkland earned first team all-South Coast Conference and team MVP honors this past season. Kirkland was also an All-America nominee and was named Mt. SAC’s Fall Athlete of the Year in 2002.
