9/18/2002

2002 Women''s Soccer
Sacramento State women’s soccer continues its longest homestand of the 2002 season as the Hornets face Idaho on Friday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m., and Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. at Hornet Soccer Field. Sunday’s match will be the first of a scheduled doubleheader with the Hornet men’s soccer team.

Last week, Idaho went 0-2 after losses to Iowa and DePaul. On Sept. 13, Katelyn Quinn recorded her second goal in the first overtime period to give Iowa a 2-1 win over the Vandals at the Iowa Soccer Complex. Emily Nelson scored Idaho’s lone goal. On Sept. 15, DePaul outshot the Vandals, 14-3, including nine shots on goal to zero as the Blue Demons won a 1-0 contest at Wish Field.

Last season, three Vandals recorded goals as Idaho defeated Sacramento State, 3-0, on Sept. 23, at Guy Wick Field. The Hornets will be facing Idaho for only the second time in program history (1994-present).

Last week, Saint Mary’s finished 0-2 against the Pac-10 with losses to 11th-ranked Cal and second-ranked Stanford. On Sept. 13, Kelsey Karlson recorded two goals to lead Stanford to a 3-1 win over Saint Mary’s at Maloney Field. Burgess became the first opponent to score on the Cardinal in 2002. On Sept. 15, the Golden Bears tied the score with 14 seconds remaining as the two schools ended with a 1-1 contest at Garaventa Field. Sara Burgess led the Gaels’ offense with one goal and four shots.

Last season, Katie Frattone recorded two goals to lead Saint Mary’s to a 4-0 win over Sacramento State on Oct. 2, at Garaventa Field. The Hornets are 1-3 in the all-time series.

HEAD COACH KAREN HANKS

After establishing Cal State Dominguez Hills as one of the strongest NCAA Division II programs in the country, Karen Hanks will look to continue her success with the Hornets as she becomes the second coach women’s soccer in Sacramento State history (1994-present).

In seven years with the Toros, Hanks recorded a 93-36-13 overall record and a 62-17-5 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The 13th winningest active Div. II coach in the nation, Hanks guided the Toros to four-consecutive CCAA titles (1995-98) and four NCAA Div. II Women’s Soccer Tournament appearances (1997-99, 2001). She also guided the Toros to the 1997 NCAA semifinals and was named 1997 NCAA West Regional Coach of the Year. Hanks also earned CCAA Coach of the Year honors in 1995 and 1996.

A LOOK AT LAST WEEK

Kelan Brill’s goal in the 79th minute gave Creighton a 1-0 win over Sacramento State on Sept. 13 at Hornet Soccer Field.

The teams were evenly matched as Creighton recorded 16 shots (six on goal) while the Hornets totaled 14 (six on goal). Bluejay goalkeeper Jamie Thompson recorded six saves for the win while Hornet junior goalkeeper Amy Seely notched five saves.

CENTER OF ATTENTION

Linda Sanchez made her Hornet debut against Pacific on Aug. 30 after complications with her transcripts. Touted as one of the program’s top players by the Hornet coaching staff, Sanchez had to sit out during the preseason in order for a waiver to clear through the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Upon her reinstatement prior to the first game, Sanchez jumped into the starting lineup as the team’s central midfielder. The North Highlands, Calif., native forced the Sept. 1 contest against San Francisco into double overtime with her first goal of the season.

Sanchez has made her mark on Hornet soccer as she leads the team with two goals, including the only goal scored in the Sept. 8 contest against Wyoming.

OTHER NOTABLES

Lisa Wrightsman ranks third in the Big Sky Conference in shots per game with an average of 2.80, but Sacramento State holds the No. 6 spot with an average of 0.80 goals scored per game...junior Amy Seely ranks second in saves with an average of 7.20 per game.
