WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS IN FINAL TUNE-UP
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's soccer team lost, 2-0, to the Sacramento Storm in the Hornets' final exhibition game prior to the 2012 season.
The women's soccer team fell, 2-0, in their final exhibition game this season.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead as former Hornets Leah Larot and Katie McCoy each scored in the first half. Larot led the Hornets in scoring as a senior in 2010 while McCoy earned the Big Sky Conference Golden Boot award as a senior in 2007 after leading the league in scoring. McCoy is also second in program history with 76 career points and leads all Hornets with 22 career assists.
Larot and McCoy were joined by fellow former Hornets Missy Matzen, Lisa Wrightsman, Krystal Moreno, Tiffany Fraser, Felecia Novoa and Jennifer Lawrence on the Storm’s roster.
The Hornets started seven players who didn’t see game action last year, including four true freshmen. Head coach Randy Dedini used two more freshmen came off the bench and 18 total players in the game. Most of the Hornets' upperclassmen did not play or saw limited minutes.
Sacramento State placed four of its 12 shots on goal.
Senior Shelby Tomasello earned the start in goal after sophomore Kimberly Mata played all 90 minutes at Pacific on Friday night. No keeper on the Hornets’ roster this year has ever appeared in a collegiate game. Tomasello allowed both goals while making five saves.
Sacramento State opens up its regular season Aug. 19 against Nevada. The contest not only starts the 2012 season, but a three-game homestand that also sees the Hornets play rival UC Davis on Aug. 24 and Cal Poly on Aug. 26.
