PROTHE SCORES FOURTH GOAL, BUT WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS, 3-1, TO NORTHERN COLORADO

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Senior captain Caitlin Prothe put the Sacramento State women's soccer team on the board with an 86th minute goal Friday afternoon, but it was too little to late as the Hornets fell to the Northern Colorado Bears, 3-1.

With the loss, Sacramento State falls to 3-12-2 overall and 2-6 in Big Sky play while Northern Colorado improves to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in league.

Prothe's goal came after a perfect through ball from junior Bonnie Ford. She played the pass cleanly, dribbled past her defender, and drilled one in across the box and into the far corner.

The goal was Prothe's fourth on the year, just one shy of her career high (five, 2017). She has scored three of her four goals against conference opponents.

For Ford, the assist was her fourth this season, tying her for the team lead with Kylee Kim-Bustillos. The four assists are also a career-high for the midfielder.

Ford and Prothe tied for the team lead in shots, each taking three and each placing two of them on goal. Camila Fonseca, Skylar Littlefield, and Erika Munoz each added a shot on frame in the match, as well, while Julia Herrera and Shay Valenzano took the remaining two shots.

For Northern Colorado, Maddie Roberts connected twice with Mariel Gutierrez, the later scoring two goals while the former added two assists. Their first hook up came in the 9th minute and second in the 68th. The Bears added their third goal in the 77th minute.

The match between the Hornets and Bears was also a physical one, featuring 28 combined fouls - 14 on each team - and four yellow cards, including three on Sacramento State.

Friday's loss eliminates the Hornets from the Big Sky postseason picture, who needed a Montana loss if they were to lose Friday and remain in the hunt. Instead, they will look to play spoiler Sunday against a Montana team that has yet to lock up their postseason berth.

Additionally, Sunday will be a special celebration for the Hornets' three graduating seniors - Prothe, Allie Zwerling, and Sarah Sherwood. Friends and family are encouraged to attend Sunday's match as the trio will be recognized pregame with a Senior ceremony.

Kickoff on Sunday is set for 12:00 pm. For more details, be sure to visit the Sacramento State women's soccer schedule online at HornetSports.com.
