SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sarah Sherwood delivered Sunday afternoon with her first career goal, leveling the score 1-1 against the visiting Saint Mary's Gaels. The goal proved critical as it was the last of the day in what turned out to be a 1-1 draw.
Sherwood's goal came in the 69th minute of play and was a beauty from roughly 30 yards out. Shaded to the near side toward the Hornets bench, Sherwood received a pass from Erika Sosa. After a nice move to put space between her and her defender, Sherwood unloaded on the ball, sending it high over the defense and over the leaping Saint Mary's goalkeeper for the equalizer.
A senior, Sherwood sat out all of last year for Sacramento State after transferring from Serra JC. Sunday's equalizer was her first goal as a Hornet. Sosa picked up her second assist of the year on the play.
Saint Mary's scored their goal in similar fashion just four minutes earlier. A Hornets miscommunication turned into a turnover just outside their own box. The Gaels' Kelsey Hill was there to pick up the loose ball and drill it high over a leaping Kaylyn Evans from 20 yards out for the game's first goal.
Overall, Evans wasn't faced with many tough situations, making one save while facing eight total shots from the Gaels. Sacramento State took 11 total shots, including six on goal.
In the two overtime periods, Sacramento State outshot Saint Mary's 4-1 and placed two of those shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net for the game-winner.
Sunday's match against Saint Mary's was the last non-conference contest this year for Sacramento State. They open Big Sky play next weekend on the road as they travel to Eastern Washington and Idaho next Friday and Sunday.
Friday's match against the Eagles is scheduled for a 3:00 pm kickoff. For more details, be sure to visit the Sacramento State women's soccer schedule online at HornetSports.com.
