DAVIS, Calif. — Senior Kayla Collins scored in the 32nd minute and that proved to be enough for the Sacramento State women's soccer team to defeat UC Davis, 1-0, on Monday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field.
The win improved the Hornets to 4-3 on the year and continued the team's streak of each game this season being decided by one goal. The Aggies dropped to 1-7. The Hornets also picked up five points in the Causeway Cup — the annual all-sports competition between the two schools — to give Sacramento State a 10-0 lead in 2017-18 with both wins coming on the UC Davis campus.
Sacramento State controlled the possession and pace of the game for the entire contest. The Hornets outshot UC Davis, 12-5, including four shots on goal compared to zero for the Aggies. The team broke through two-thirds of the way into the first half when freshmen Skylar Littlefield and Kylee Kim-Bustillos connected passes to Collins who converted on a cross to the far post for her first goal of the season. Collins started her collegiate career at UC Davis before transferring to the Hornets where she has now scored 11 career goals.
Freshman Aaliyah Fesili earned her second shutout of the season without having to make a save. Fesili lowered her goals against average to 0.76 and was aided by a strong performance from the Hornet backline which was able to halt most of the Aggies' attacks before they reach the 18-yard box.
Offensively, Bonnie Ford and Collins each had three shots with one on goal. Caitlin Prothe and Andrea Boehm had two shots apiece.
Sacramento State will next play at Cal Poly on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
