SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fans can get their first look at the 2013 Sacramento State women's soccer team as it plays host to the Sacramento Storm in an exhibition contest at 5 p.m. Sunday at Hornet Field. The match will be the second of two exhibition contests for the Hornets before they open their regular season Aug. 23 at UC Davis.
Sunday's match will be Clubs, Camps and Kids' Day, with a free mini clinic to take place after the game with the Hornet players. Admission for the match will be free for all fans.
On Friday Sacramento State played at No. 16 Santa Clara in its first exhibition contest and dropped a 4-1 decision. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime as Hornet junior goalkeeper Kimberly Mata made four saves during the opening period. Sacramento State benefited from an own goal late in the first half and totaled nine shots on the night, placing four on goal.
The Hornets will get a chance to play on their home field before playing their first three regular season matches on the road. After facing UC Davis next Friday the team will play at Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield the following weekend before returning home. Sacramento State's regular season home opener will be Sept. 6 at 2:30 p.m. vs. UNLV in the first match of a doubleheader with the Hornet men's soccer team.
The Sacramento Storm play in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) and have a roster comprised of college players, national team players, and former pro team players. The team plays its home matches at Cosumnes Oaks High School in Elk Grove.
