GYMNASTICS FALLS TO SAN JOSE STATE IN SEASON OPENER

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The Sacramento State gymnastics team could not survive a shaky start as the Hornets fell to San Jose State, 191.300-187.275, in their 2003 season opener Friday evening in Spartan Gym. The Hornets fell to 0-1 on the season while the Spartans raised their record to 1-3.

Sacramento State managed to defeat the Spartans on vault with a mark of 48.250-47.750 but were outscored by San Jose State in every other event for the rest of the evening. Including the 2002 season, the Hornets have now recorded a score of 48.0 or higher on vault in nine-consecutive meets.

Senior Jenny Diamond (9.625), junior Binta Coleman (9.675), sophomore Jessica Hoffman (9.675), and freshmen Trista Condren (9.625) and Kimiye Narasaki (9.65) led the Hornets on vault while sophomore Stefanie Aeder (9.775, floor) rounded out the Hornets’ top scorers.

Condren, a native Atwater, Calif., also placed first on beam with a score of 9.65 while freshman Carrie Kinghorn led all Hornets with a score of 9.425 on bars.

San Jose State senior Dani Albright led all competitors with an all-around score of 38.575 including meet-high’s on floor (9.825) and vault (9.725). Junior Shirla Choy finished first on bars with a score of 9.75 to also lead the Spartans.

Sacramento State will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. when the Hornets host their home opener against Cal in the Hornet Nest.
